Data governance is where you define the metadata schema - The shared set of information fields attached to documents, used for filtering at retrieval time and as MCP tool filters.

Metadata schema

Go to Data governance, Metadata schema tab. The schema defines the metadata fields shared across the workspace - Used for filtering at retrieval time, as MCP tool filters and as columns when exporting / importing CSV.
1

Add a field

Click Add field, set the code (e.g. muc_do_mat), display label, type and allowed values. Mark it Required if every document must have it.
2

Use it in KBs

New fields are on by default in KBs. Go to the KB’s Settings tab to choose which fields are MCP filters.
3

Fill in values

Assign them on each file, use folder metadata rules, or Edit in Excel on the source page.
The Export / import schema block (Export JSON, Import JSON) recreates the exact field set in another environment; import shows which fields are added, changed or in conflict. Schema change history records who changed what, when and with what impact.
Note: Field codes cannot be changed after creation. Display labels can be renamed freely, but codes go straight into MCP tool parameters and CSV columns - Changing a code breaks every running integration.
