# Instructions

> The Digital Worker's job description

Instructions is the block of text describing who the Digital Worker is and how it works. The Digital Worker reads it before every single answer, which makes it the part with the biggest say in how good the Digital Worker turns out.

![Agent instructions](https://mintcdn.com/fpt-15dbd015/ZZ_AlSQhekpFaExV/images/eos/en_agent_details.jpg?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=ZZ_AlSQhekpFaExV\&q=85\&s=20bd30eeaf35bf9ecd6b9d50e4f186b1)

## What good Instructions cover

* **Who the Digital Worker is** - its role and the ground it covers
* **What it can and cannot do** - the limits of its abilities, so it never promises something out of reach
* **The order of work** - what it does first, what comes after, and when it has to ask
* **Tone and language** - how it addresses people, how long its answers run, which language it replies in
* **Hard rules** - the things it must never get wrong, such as inventing figures

## Controls on the screen

| Button | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Preview / Markdown** | Read the formatted version, or switch to the Markdown source to edit by hand |
| **Refine with AI** | Ask the assistant to polish what is currently open |
| **Test chat** | Talk to the Digital Worker to see whether it behaves the way you intended |

## Calling skills, connectors and knowledge with /

While you write Instructions, type **/** to open a menu of the skills, connectors and knowledge bases already attached to the Digital Worker. Pick one and Console inserts the reference at the cursor, so you never have to remember and retype a tool name.

![The quick-reference menu opened with a slash](https://mintcdn.com/fpt-15dbd015/gDW0AWl75k3m2kQW/images/eos/en_slash_menu.jpg?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=gDW0AWl75k3m2kQW\&q=85\&s=dac626dc5f734ee43439386dcdc58e7f)

The menu has three groups, each with a count:

| Group | What it lists |
| - | - |
| **Skills** | Workspace skills attached to this Digital Worker |
| **Connectors (Tools)** | Connectors attached to this Digital Worker, with a source label such as Built-in |
| **Knowledge** | Knowledge bases the Digital Worker reads. With none attached, the group is greyed out and reads None yet |

### How it works

**1. Type /**

The menu opens at the cursor. Keep typing to filter by name.

**2. Open the group you need**

Press the right arrow or click the group name. Each group has its own search box.

**3. Pick an item and insert it**

Press Enter. The reference appears as a chip with an icon and a name rather than plain text, so you can see at a glance which tool the Digital Worker points at.

The shortcuts sit at the foot of the menu: up and down to move, Enter to insert, right arrow to open a group, left arrow to go back, Esc to close.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The menu lists workspace skills only. Built-in skills such as file-reading, pdf and docx are always available, so they need no reference.

> [!TIP]
>
> Write Instructions the way you would write a job description for a new hire: be specific, give examples, spell out the exceptions. Vague wording produces vague answers.
